The Kuwaiti Union of Women's Associations announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the committee responsible for family and women's affairs in the Republic of Uzbekistan to provide support and assistance between the two parties in protecting women's rights and legitimate interests in accordance with the laws applicable in both countries and enhancing friendly relations between them.

This came in a speech by the President of the Union, Sheikha Fadia Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, prior to the signing via video call - with the Chairwoman of the Committee on Family and Women's Affairs in the Republic of Uzbekistan, Barbi Payieva Abdul Qadirova, today, Thursday, in the presence of the consul of the Embassy of Uzbekistan, Islam Terof.

She said that everyone is aware of the importance of the international changes facing the world today, and that international charters and national legislation, no matter how important they are, cannot alone achieve the empowerment of women, who are the cornerstone of the family and society, but need continuous programs to implement these principles on the ground.

Sheikh Fadia emphasized that the importance of this agreement lies in the alignment of visions towards looking to the future with a renewed perspective that emphasizes the importance of empowering women and families through tangible programs and a plan that translates the contents of this memorandum into an effective and distinguished partnership between the two countries.

She explained that the agreement, which includes seven articles, stipulates that the parties, within their jurisdiction, shall develop cooperation in the field of protecting women's rights and legitimate interests in accordance with the laws applicable in the contracting states and develop interaction regarding family support.

She also pointed out that it includes promoting gender equality and increasing women's role in public and governmental life, developing women's entrepreneurship, exchanging information and knowledge, research results in the field of protecting women's rights and legitimate interests, and enhancing healthy lifestyles.

Sheikh Fadia said that the memorandum stipulates the development of training programs and the enhancement of women's capabilities at the national and local levels, as well as the exchange of experiences.

She indicated that it also includes exchanging information about ongoing activities, new ideas, and best practices, as well as forming joint platforms to discuss issues related to family, women, and children's problems and to support and assist each other in discussing useful issues within the framework of the activities and forums of international and regional organizations.

She explained that the memorandum stipulates the exchange of experiences, references, statistical and analytical information related to ongoing work in the field of family, women, and children, promoting and encouraging women's achievements in society and enhancing their role in social, political, and cultural life.

Sheikh Fadia said that the signing comes in the context of celebrating Kuwaiti Women's Day, initiated by the Chairwoman of the Women's Affairs Committee, Sheikha Latifa Al-Fahad Al-Salem Al-Sabah at the time, and approved by the Council of Ministers in 2015, which is the same day Kuwaiti women obtained their full political rights in 2005.

She pointed out that some people are afraid to talk about gender equality, affirming that there is a misunderstanding and that talking about equality is within the limits of Kuwaiti legislation and law, adhering to all that Kuwait has preserved from clauses that contradict Islamic law. However, the goal is civil equality and women's development.

She indicated that the union is working to strengthen the role and capabilities of women not only as workers but also as homemakers who raise future generations to accept others' opinions and openness to the world, especially with the attempts of globalization through the internet.

Sheikh Fadia thanked the current and former political leadership for their support for women at all times and in various fields, leading to what women have achieved and their tangible accomplishments and advanced status that calls for pride and pride
